Recently, my company decided to let us work from home one day per week. Before, we had 12 work from home days to use for the year, but that didn’t feel like quite enough (especially in the winter with all the bad weather!). When the email was sent out, everybody was audibly excited. I can’t describe how much easier this makes my life and how grateful I am to my company for taking its employees concerns and requests seriously.

I’m not at all thinking about looking for a new job, but this new policy cements my desire to stay at this company even more. I know I’ve talked before about the importance of feeling appreciated at work, and my company truly makes me feel that way. I think it’s so important for office morale to not only ask for your employees’ opinions, but to really listen to them. For example, at the start of my first two performance review discussions with my manager, I remember him asking how I was doing and if I was happy at this company and in my job. That meant so much to me and I’m so thankful that I have a manager like that.

I know it’s easy for me to say because I’m happy in my current role, but if you feel unhappy, dissatisfied, or underappreciated in your career or are just itching for something new–don’t hesitate! I’m glad I didn’t hesitate almost 3 years ago when I took this job. A successful career is all about taking risks (or at least, that’s what I hear from those who actually have an established career!) and I’m inclined to follow that advice because I know more people who are happy in their careers than who aren’t.

Sometimes adversity can strike when you least expect. During those times your outlook can determine if the event is overwhelmingly negative, or just a temporary setback. Fortunately, my latest round of difficulties wasn’t anything I could consider major. About two weeks ago, my water heater broke. It started with a weird hissing sound and began to leak a few minutes later. I shut off the supply of water to the tank and called for help in draining all 30 gallons of water into buckets. We finally ended up connecting a hose to let everything drain into the bathtub. I knew the water heater was old and would eventually have to be replaced, but the fact that it suddenly decided to go without any warning signs was stressful. If the water had begun to leak an hour later, I would have been on my way to work and unable to stop the leak before it did major damage.

Needless to say, I was extremely thankful that the water heater decided to die when it did. I was also grateful that on the same day, I received my tax refund. I wanted to use the money to pay off business taxes to the City of Philadelphia, make some minor repairs to the car, buy myself a new digital camera to replace my 11-year-old one, and save the remainder of the refund. With the unexpected expense of replacing a major component of my home, my plans were somewhat derailed. However, I could have let the incident get me down and mope. Instead, I’m glad the incident wasn’t worse than it was and that I had the extra money for the said expense. Gratitude isn’t always easy, but it really can brighten your mood at times.

I wanted to take the opportunity in this post to recognize that things are going well for me right now and to express gratitude for them. I read a blog post recently about the importance of gratitude in your every day life and how keeping it in the forefront of your mind at all times will inspire a greater sense of positivity. I’ve been trying to do that these days by writing down what I’m most grateful for, either right when I wake up in the morning or before I fall asleep at night. It’s done wonders for me recently.

Before and during the holidays, I was really slacking on my exercise and as much as I didn’t want to admit it, it was really affecting me. Recently, I’ve made it more of a priority and, just as a small example, I make myself walk on the treadmill desk at work every day. It may seem like a small thing but I feel amazing when I’m finished–I just walked a mile at work without having to leave the building! Although I was wary of the open office plan at first, this is definitely one of the perks. I’m grateful that I have the opportunity to exercise at work even just a little bit.

I’m very grateful for kind, helpful public transit employees. If you know me in real life, you know that I complain about the train a lot, even though I have to take it every day. It’s expensive, not always reliable, and sometimes the employees are not very nice; however, one employee that has been a regular on my morning train has changed my outlook. She is extremely friendly (always greeting us all with a smile and a “Good morning!”),  helpful (she communicates exactly what is going on if there is a delay, even if we are stopped for just one minute waiting for another train to pass. I can’t express how helpful that is. A lot of the time, other employees won’t say a word and will outright ignore you if you ask what’s going on), and she genuinely cares that she does a good job at work. I wrote a commendation to the company yesterday because I wanted them to know how much I appreciate her.

My youngest sister and I took my grandmother out for dinner and drinks last Friday and had a sleepover at my grandmother’s. I’m so grateful that, at almost 30 years old, I still have my grandmother around. I had 2 sets of grandparents, 1 set of great-grandparents, and 1 great-grandmother around until pretty recently and they all played a major role in my life and my upbringing. So, spending time with my grandmother now is pretty special.
